Exploring Liberal Spaces: Reimagining Freedom in Contemporary Pakistan, Alumni Gathering
In a world increasingly challenged by polarization and restrictive ideologies, Freedom Gate continues to foster a vision grounded in liberal values, openness, and democratic ideals. One of its most dynamic and forward-looking initiatives in 2023 was the 21st Alumni Gathering of the International Academy for Leadership (IAF), held from October 28 to 30, 2023, at the serene Lahore Country Club in Muridke. Themed "Exploring Liberal Spaces – Liberal Solutions to Contemporary Challenges," the event served as both a reunion and a reinvigoration of liberal thought among over 60 distinguished alumni.
This three-day forum was meticulously curated to reflect on the enduring relevance of liberal principles in Pakistan’s evolving socio-political landscape. With participation from civil society advocates, educators, young professionals, and public policy contributors, the gathering celebrated more than two decades of fostering leadership, dialogue, and international collaboration through the IAF. Since 1995, Pakistani alumni have returned from the IAF experience in Germany, becoming formidable voices for freedom, human rights, and inclusive governance.
A Journey Through Critical Reflection and Creative Engagement
The event commenced with an inauguration and welcome by Birgit Lamm. The opening sessions emphasized bonding and reflection, setting a tone of familiarity, unity, and renewed purpose. A moving keynote dinner speech by Jami Chandio underscored the essence of liberal values as practical responses to the socio-economic and political challenges facing Pakistan today.
The second day featured an intellectually robust agenda beginning with a panel discussion on the “50 years of the Constitution and 75 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR),” moderated by seasoned journalist Waqar Rizvi. The open and provocative dialogue linked constitutional history with contemporary demands for dignity, inclusion, and justice.
Innovative methodologies like Open Space Technology and World Café transformed participants from passive listeners into co-creators. Alumni self-selected into working groups exploring themes ranging from liberal democracy and global prosperity to digital sovereignty and climate justice. Posters curated by Zafarullah Khan visually narrated Pakistan's electoral and human rights evolution, igniting rich debates around civic participation and historical memory.
An emotional highlight of the event was the “What Our Alumni Did in 2023” session, followed by one-minute elevator pitches on future plans for 2024. These rapid-fire presentations, followed by voting and final idea pitches, turned vision into action. Alumni whose ideas were selected will receive support and funding from Freedom Gate in 2024, affirming the organization’s commitment to participatory project design and community-led innovation.
A Celebration of Continuity and Transformation
The gathering was not only a celebration of achievements but also a reaffirmation of Freedom Gate’s enduring commitment to liberalism in the face of global regression and national complexities. Through reflective panels, thematic debates, skill-building workshops, and a rich cultural night, the event reignited the spirit of collaboration, courage, and curiosity that defines the IAF alumni network.
As Freedom Gate continues to evolve, this event symbolized its readiness to carry forward the liberal torch in Pakistan—empowering citizens to think critically, act compassionately, and contribute meaningfully to a freer, more equitable society.
